CLUB CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL FESTIVAL
West Bergholt Cricket Club has concluded another highly successful Festival in the hot and sunny weather. Over 300 people visited the club’s sundrenched Manor Ground to play and watch cricket as well as to enjoy the bar facilities and continuous barbecues.
First up on Thursday were the HM Prison Officers X1 who threw off the shackles but not enough to be beaten by the club in a competitive encounter. On Friday, the traditional Festival fixture pitted the club against the multi-coloured Real Oddies with WBCC needing one run off the last ball. Fortunately for the home side, club captain David Applin was up to the task, stroking the required single.
On Saturday, the club welcomed Kent touring side St Mary’s CC for the second year. In a 40 overs match, the visitors prevailed on this occasion by a comfortable 40+ runs. In the evening there was fun for the members and their families when a Horse Racing event was held at the ground.
Sunday dawned bright and the club welcomed several local clubs to its inaugural Kwik Cricket tournament. This event was managed by Kwik Cricket manager, Simon Lockwood and attended by a vast throng of happy youngsters and their parents.
On a more sombre note, Chairman Nigel Passmore marked the recent sad death of club stalwart, Peter Redhead. There was a minute’s silence in respect of Peter who had established a new Junior Under 14 team two years earlier and many of these players were present . Peter will be missed by all at the club.
The club then staged the first four-way tournament between West Bergholt Veterans, West Bergholt Under 21s, the Village Church team and the Wynettes. Involving four matches of 10 overs per innings, the Wynettes beat the Village Church team to secure the third-place playoff position. In the final, the Under 21s beat the Veterans who failed to score the necessary four off the last ball, handing a narrow victory to the young ones.
Crown Law Solicitors of Langham, as sponsors of West Bergholt Cricket Club’s Kwik Cricket section, were represernted by Nayna Patel. She presented winning Under 21s captain Sam Brooks with the new Crown Law Shield as 2010 winners of this tournament.

CLUB ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL FESTIVAL IN THE BAKING SUN
Thanks to fine, warm weather throughout the weekend and a band of willing volunteers, the club has enjoyed another hugely successful Festival. Plans were more ambitious this year with extra visiting teams and fun activities on the Saturday and Sunday. As a result, more people than ever attended the festivities.
First up on the Thursday, the club took on the Prison Officers’X1 which were enthusiastically led by Neil Storey. In a tight finish the club prevailed, thanks to high scoring by Stuart Barton in particular.
On Friday, The Real Oddies returned once more in their multi-coloured strip but despite providing enterprising opposition, again the club held its nerve to win, thanks largely to a fine 97 from Darren Davies.
On Saturday, the club welcomed St Mary’s CC, a touring team from Kent. In a very tight encounter, the tourists clinched victory in a 40 overs match with two balls to spare. Next it was the turn of the youngsters who enjoyed a hard fought game of Kwik Cricket. Meanwhile, the coconut shy and the wellie throwing were doing brisk business. The evening was concluded with a very well supported Horseracing event, followed by a disco.
To complete the festivities, the club staged a three-way tournament between the Wynettes, Village Church X1 and the WBCC Legends on the Sunday. The latter were led ably by President, John Grimwade, and consisted of ‘older’ players, some of which have retired from the game of cricket. However, after the Wynettes had beaten Church X1, the creaking bones managed to stay on two legs just about long enough to win both their games and emerge winners. The very young were kept entertained by a Bouncy Castle.
The club raised vital funds for future development thanks to the support of over 300 visitors over the weekend. In addition, £342 was raised in charity to be split equally between Marie Curie Cancer Care Fund and the Village Church appeal.
Chairman Nigel Passmore would like to thank the committee for their tireless work in organising and running the Festival; in addition the many members, Tea Ladies and other volunteers for all their hard work and commitment.

CLUB ANNOUNCES TWO NEW JACK PETCHEY AWARD WINNERS
The club has awarded its first two winners of 2009 of the prestigious Jack Petchey award during May.
First up was Sam Brooks who showed great commitment to coaching the club's Juniors right from the start of the indoor nets through to the Friday training sessions. In addition, as the new Vice-Captain of the Saturday A2C side, his organisational activities are of great benefit to the club. On top of all this he scored his first 50 for the club!
Sam elected to spend the £200 award on new matting for the original net.
On Friday 22 May, young George Wall scooped the award, beating off some tough opposition on a heavily attended evening. He had just scored an excellent 50 and he is popular with his teammates for his all-round commitment to the team.
George asked the club to spend the £200 award on new practice balls and a battery pack for the bowling machine.
The next award will be presented on Friday 5 June.

Bergholt Lose close encounter!
West Bergholt met division 5 promotion hopefulls Woodham Mortimer this sunday, and Woodham Mortimer certantly got more than they bargained for! Loosing the toss, West Bergholt were asked to bat, and a confident Woodham Mortimer thought they could control the game, but openers Jimmy McClewan and Andy Buckley had different ideas. The first two overs went for 10 runs, then the shackles were broken and both openers retired within 5 overs. Andy Clark and Sam Brooks went to work to keep up the pace, but realised they needed to get on with it and both fell cheaply. Nigel Passmore showed promise with 11, and Paul Brooks 'took one for the team' being run out for 5. Jimmy McClewan ended up being run out for 25 including 2 sixes, and Andy Buckley ended up on 33 not out including 3 sixes, the last ball being hit for 6. A total of 92 for 5 was going to be challenging, but was it enough?
It seemed that Woodham Mortimer wanted to trade 6's for 6's, and this certantly made their start to their innings a slow one. Thier openers took until the 9th over to retire, and some good bowling from Jimmy McClewan (3-0-19-0), Nigel Passmore (3-0-18-0) and Andy Buckley (2.2-0-16-1) saw it come down to the final over with just 4 needed. Skipper Andy Buckley bowled two dot balls and the game was on, only for a mis-field to allow Woodham Mortimer the win, that could have gone either way.
A good game, and Bergholt showed they can compete with the top teams in Division 5, next week the schoolboys of Coggeshall; a must win!

Braintree Indoor League Match 11
West Bergholt win again....
The Notley sports centre has not been the kind to West Bergholt in recent months, playing 4 games and losing 4 games. Matters were made worse travelling their this sunday without run-machine Chris Southernwood. Losing the toss again, West Bergholt were put into bat, and soon found themselves in trouble within the first two overs with Jimmy McClewan and Andy Buckley back in the hutch with a score of 5 for 2. In came Dave Applin appearing in his last indoor match of the season before setting off for the warmer climate of Chiang Mai, and the ever reliable Andy Clark. Knowing that Bergholt were in a hole, they carefully pulled themselves out of it with Dave retiring on 28 (including a mighty six) and Andy Clark ending up on 27 not out. Tony Bull made a very useful contribution of 10 not out, as West Bergholt ended on 76 for 2. Paul Brooks ending up without having to bat.
Knowing that bowling and fielding was their stronger suite, skipper Andy Buckley opened with the bowling of Jimmy McClewan, and he didnt dissapoint. This is his third week of bowling useful spells, ending up with figures of 3-0-19-0. Tony Bull opened the bowling and with figures of 3-0-27-1, the gamble paid off. 2 quick run outs later, the death bowlers of the two Andys (Buckley 2-0-10-1 and Clark 1.5-0-8-1) saw Bergholt to one of the unlikliest wins. Special praise should go to Paul Brooks who took one of the run outs, and the all important diving catch to seal Boreham Reserves fate.
No game this week coming, but the following week 8th March were at the Braintree Leisure Centre at 730pm.

Braintree Indoor League Match 10
WEST BERGHOLT DEFEAT HALSTEAD
Indoor cricket continued this week as West Bergholt put in a fine performance to beat Halstead. Losing the toss is a familiar occurance for skipper Andy Buckley, put into bat the decision looked a poor one from Halstead as openers Chris Southernwood and Andy Buckley had the scoreboard rattling at 41 without loss inside 3 overs. An upish drive from Andy Buckley saw him caught and bowled for 21, Chris Southernwood continued his fine form retiring soon afterwards. Progress was slow thereafter, though 'chang mai sixes' veteran Dave Applin contributed with a quick 6. Tony Bull and Paul Brooks were both out cheaply but this saw the return of Chris Southernwood to push the score up to 101 all out, with Chris hitting another 3 sixes making a total of 20 in 6 innings, in his fine knock of 53.
A pumped West Bergholt took to the field, with Jimmy McClewan opening the bowling. Off a reduced run up, we saw something not witnesses often, control from Jimmy. His figures of 3-0-16-1 together with opening bowler Chris Southernwood (3-0-19-0) made sure Halstead were to work for their runs. The fielding was excellent except a few bloopers from the skipper, but this was more than made up with his bowling figures of 2.4-0-10-2, and two crucial run outs. Praise must also go to Tony Bull, coming on to bowl his 3 overs in a pressure situation Tony returned his best indoor figures of 3-0-26-2. Dave Applin bagged another victim with the gloves and Paul Brooks took the important catch of Halsteads final wicket to seal their fate.
A great team performance in the field, Bergholt now face Halstead in the cup next week.

16-12-08
After being troubled by availability and illness leading up to Sunday, West Bergholt travelled to Braintree with a bare minimum of 4 players expecting to be defeated, and indeed defeated, but getting two bonus points. After winning the toss, the only thing skipper Andy Buckley could do was to bat and try to make a game of it. Chris Southerwood opened up with new partner Sam Coleman, and it wasnt long before Chris opened his 6 hitting account again. In the first over he dispatched Coggeshall's bowler for 3 consecutive sixes, adding another 6 in the next over to retire again very quickly. As of tonight, Chris currently tops the 6 hitting table with a mamouth 17 in 4 games http://www.bdicl.com/Awardspage.html With Chris retiring it brought in Alex Barnett who also joined the 6 hitting tables with a 6 off his second ball. As with Alex though, he was quickly dismissed trying to repeat the shot. Sam Coleman played the wall and then pulled a short ball and got caught off the side wall for 2. Andy Buckley played the wall as well but was out lbw to an inswinger for 6. Chris came back and made 46 out of a total of 67 (West Bergholt's second higest score at the Notley Sports Centre).
With the need to take wickets quickly, Chris opened the bowling with Andy Buckley, no joy for Chris, Andy getting the openers to nick the ball, but all makeshift keeper Sam Coleman could do was to spill the chances. 1 point was gained when Andy bowled the same opener with an inswinging yorker. Steady back up bowling took the game into the 10th over, with Sam Coleman redeeming himself with a run out, and gaining West Bergholt an extra point.
Travelling with 4 men was never going to be easy, but the 2 bonus point made it respectable. With no game now until mid January next year, its a well earned break for the team, looking forward to building on what we have gained so far this season. If we can do this and apply ourselves properly, a mid table finish should be achievable!

Braintree Indoor League - Match 7
West Bergholt entered Braintree Leisure centre high on confidence after last weeks win over Coggeshall 3rds. With keeper Dave Applin absent, the team took on a different look with Andy Clark deputising behind the stumps. Skipper Andy Buckley lost the toss as usual, and West Bergholt were put into bat. Sometimes you get the feeling that something special is to happen, and it certantly did. If ever a format of cricket was to suit any one player, it had to be Chris Southernwood. A relatively slow start from the first 3 overs looked like spelling trouble for West Bergholt, Chris Southernwood had different ideas. In an innings of 18 scoring shots, Chris put Kelevdon and Feering 3r'ds bowlers to the sword. It wasnt long before Chris retired, and with a solid retirement from Andy Clark, the platform was set, though scratchy innings from Sam Coleman, Andy Buckley and Tony Bull, meant Chris could re-enter the arena, and subsequently retire again. With Chris and Andy back together at the crease, West Bergholt eased to a total of 123-4. Andy Clark making a great innings of 34 not out, but the star of the show was Chris. 18 scoring shots, including 9 sixes, saw Chris make the highest individual score for West Bergholt this season, 65 not out!
A confident West Bergholt took to the field, and Chris wasnt done for yet! He opened the bowling with his leg spin, not claiming any wickets but bowling very well. Jimmy McClewan bowled a mixture as usual, but it was Chris's fielding that lifted the team, taking two catches one diving to his left, then a casual one hander to his right put West Bergholt firmly in the driving seat. Kelevedon and Feering though had other ideas striking the back wall with 4's regularly, but the total proved too much as regular run outs led to their downfall.
West Bergholt victorious again. Finaly score West Bergholt 123-4, Kelvedon and Feering 3rd's 113 all out

Over 40's Crumble..
On a cold night at the home of Essex County Cricket the West Bergholt over 40’s took to the indoor stage against Great Burstead in their last game of the season. With the absence of Stuart Barton the dressing room was eerily silent as skipper Neil Kemp lost the toss and was put in to bat.
On a bouncy wicket the bergholt openers Andy Clark and Neil Kemp struggled with the accurate bowling and bounce from the Burstead openers and soon found themselves in trouble after a quick single of the wall was take the Burstead fielder took aim and with a direct hit Andy Clark was just short and walking leaving Bergholt 1 down inside the second over. Kevin Johnson then strode to the crease looking to add some stability to the innings only to spoon a drive to the mid off fielder and he too was on his way, Bergholt at this stage struggling at 11 for 2.
Pete Twydell was promoted to 4 and strode purposefully to the crease and failed to trouble the scorers to much and was clean bowled soon after. The Chairman walked out to a buzzing Burstead side looking for blood and an early night! But Nigel was resolute in defence and with the odd 3 and single to raise the bergholt total. Neil Kemp was soon to follow the walk of so many batsmen before him and that brought ever green John Grimwade to the crease.
With John dabbing the ball around helping the total along and running very well between the wickets he was soon undone and caught in front and the umpire raised the slow finger and John was gone. This left Nigel to bat alone and what an innings it was. 3 and 4 being dispatched to all parts of the floor and passing 30 in the process, but he was soon to glove a bouncy delivery behind and he was gone with Bergholt all gone for 59 with Nigel the only batting of note with 30.
As the over 40’s took to the field for the last time Pete Twydell opening the bowling and instantly the Great Burstead batsmen got on to him and quickly started scoring, Neil Kemp opened up with Pete and was too put to the sword and Burstead chasing down the small total of 59 with some ease. Nigel and Andy Clark were also used to try and get the break through but with no reward. With keeper Grimwade missing a run out by kicking over the stumps before getting the ball bergholt looked beat. So Skipper Kemp seeing the end was near left Kevin Johnson bowl the last over and it brought instant rewards with one of the best one handed caught and bowled ever to be seen. But the next too balls were the only ones need for Burstead to get home with 5 over’s to spare.
A valiant effort by the over 40’s and they will wonder if they can take on the current Sunday indoor side with that kind of performance. Pictures to follow.

West Bergholt finally win....
West Bergholt finally achieved a win in the 08/09 Braintree Indoor Cricket League by defeating Coggeshall 3 rds by 16 wins, and lifting themselves off the bottom of division 5.
After losing the toss, West Bergholt were put into bat, and made a rapid start. Chris Southernwood retiring in the third over, quickly followed by Jimmy 'Honda' McClewan and debutant Dave Warden all making impresive and quick 25's. With three already retired, Dave Applin opened his account with a 4 and made steady progress before being brilliantly caught and bowled by the young coggeshall slow bowler for 7, Tony Bull made good use of the side walls, and skipper Andy Buckley first ball ended up on the back wall for 6. With a total of 112 which included 8 sixes, the score could have been more, but Bergholt's confidence was sky high in recording their highest league score this season.
Chris and Jimmy opened the bowling, and Chris had a wicket with his second ball brilliantly caught at square leg by the debutant Dave Warden, and Jimmy bowled very tightly, bowling some unplayable deliveries. The fielding was both very good in spells and also very bad; at times resembling the circus being in town. With some good support bowling from Tony Bull and Andy Buckley, Bergholt finally bowled out Coggeshall for 96. The highlight being Tony Bull's excellent figures of 3-0-31-3.
With a great team spirit, we now take this confidence forward to next week where we face a good Kelvedon and Feering side, though Bergholt now hungry for another win!

Braintree Indoor League - Match 5
After a week off, Bergholt travelled to Notley Sports Centre to face the division 5 leaders Woodham Mortimer. Winning the toss, Andy Buckley put the opposition in and restricted them to 110 for 5. Highlights of the fielding were two catches and two run outs from keeper Dave Applin, but extras top scored with 31. Jimmy and Chris opened the bowling, Jimmy keeping things tight until his 3rd over, and the gamble of using Chris to open with worked very well. Craig Allister in possibly his last game of the indoor season, kept things tight and claimed 1 wicket. Apart from the extras, the fielding was a mix of good and bad, though the team were the most relaxed seen this season, everybody had and enjoyable 12 overs in the field.
To the batting, Jimmy and Chris also opened the batting to chase down the 111 runs needed, but both fell cheaply, Jimmy edging a suspected no-ball, Chris getting run out. Dave Applin looked the most solid player yet again, but poor calling got him run out before he could get going. Tom Wilkinson seems to have quickly summed up indoor batting by playing the side walls and running quickly, together with Andy Buckley they started to rattle the division 5 leaders, until Buckley was bowled by a good ball through the gate. Tom was left with Craig Allister, but the damage was already done and West Bergholt were bowled out for 66.
No game next week, but were back at the Braintree Leisure centre on the 30th November for a bottom of the league clash with Coggeshall 3rd's. With Bergholt progressing, every member of the team needs to step up now and get us off and running with our first win!
Next Game 330pm Braintree Leisure Centre v Coggeshall 3rd's
Big Win for Oldies
WBCC recorded their first win of the season in the Over 40 championship this evening v Elsenham. Openers Barton and Clark gave us a rapid and strong platform, both scoring in the 20's. Good support from Johnson, English and Passmore with double-figure cameos ensured a challenging score of 91, soured only by Grimwade's farcical 'run-out' where every member of the opposition pleasded with the umpire for him not to be dismissed, to no avail.
No matter, Bergholt's pace attack of Passmore and Clark with magical spin support from Johnson and English ensured that Elsenham were kept in check. With 10 needed off the last over, it seemed that the points were not headed for North Essex but kamikaze running by the M11 lads assisted by superb fielding won the day with two run-outs to leave us with a win by 2 runs with one ball left.
Celebrations ensued at the Sun Inn at Kelvedon in time-honoured fashion. This result lifts WBCC off the foot of the table into respectable mid-table.
Braintree Indoor League - Match 3
West Bergholt travelled to the Notley sports centre on sunday, on high hopes of recording their first victory, but came away with a league record, played 3 lost 3!
West Bergholt were struggling before they even left the red herring car park with 1 member not turning up. After failed attempts, the team left one man down. Skipper Andy Buckley kept up his 100% record of loosing the toss, and was put into bat against Halstead. Debutant Alex Barnett opened the batting with the keen Sam Coleman and got Bergholt off to a slow start, With Alex going gun ho and having his stumps go in all directions in the 2nd over so keeper Dave Applin strode to the wicket determined not to let things go from bad to worse, and gave the innings the stability it needed. Sam Coleman quickly entered the 6 hitting league, but then got out soon after. Skipper Andy Buckley struggled to find his form of the previous week and made a scratchy 7. With Dave Applin passing 25 and retiring, he to came back and opened his 6 hitting account, and top scored with 35. Craig Allister gave the usual support with his vital experience.
Bergholt finished on a semi-respectable 68 all out. Bergholt soon had Halstead in trouble, Craig Allister claiming the first wicket within the first over caught by the expereinced Dave Applin with the gloves, then adding a second wicket in his second over caught and bowled. Andy Buckley bowled steadily with no luck, and it was left to Alex Barnett and Sam Coleman to bowl the remaining overs out.
Another improvement on the previous weeks effort, though a hole will be left in the side for the next two weeks as Dave Applin goes off to warmer climates; his experience will be sorely missed.
So off to the Braintree leisure centre next week to play Boreham Reserves who are challenging for promotion; Bergholt challenging for their first win.
Next match Sunday 2nd November - Braintree Leisure Centre v Boreham Reserves 7.30pm
Braintree Indoor League - Match 2
West Bergholt suffered another defeat in the Braintree Indoor League last night, although it could be said it was an improvement on the previous week. Facing another experienced team, West Bergholt lost the toss again and Coggeshall A Reserves decided to bat first. A reduced overs game saw Coggeshall rattle up an impressive 124 of 10 overs, showing Bergholt exactly how to bat at the Leisure Centre. James McClewan opened the bowling once again for Bergholt and bowled much better than the previous week; going past the edge of the bat on numerous occasions, and then getting 'no-balled' for pitching it too short! Typical Jimmy! Good support bowling from Andy Buckley, Craig Allistair and the 'sixes master' Dave Applin kept the score under control taking the only Coggeshall wicket.
Coggeshall once again showed Bergholt how to bat indoors, and skipper Andy Buckley could only hope that the Bergholt batsmen had taken note. Opening with Sam Coleman and Jimmy McClewan, West Bergholt soon found themselves in trouble inside the first 4 overs, struggling along 13 for 3. A brief partnership between Dave Applin and Andy Buckley showed signs of maturity from Bergholt, until tragedy struck and Dave Applin was run out pushing for a tight 3. Determined to beat their previous score of 45, skipper Andy Buckley and Craig Allistair kept pushing the singles to crawl up to 46, then Andy Buckley opened his shoulders and had some fun reaching 56 not out, the last over going for 26 runs including 4 consecutive sixes, entertaining the rest of Bergholt team and VIP supporters the Southernwood family. Final score West Bergholt 86 for 5.
All in all, a disapointing defeat for West Bergholt against one of the stronger teams in division 5, but work in progress for the next game.
Next Match Sunday 26th October - Notley Sports Centre v Halstead 1300

Braintree Indoor League - Match 1
West Bergholt made a poor start in their fisrt game back in the Braintree Indoor League. Asked to bat first, the top order were caught like rabbits in the headlights, trying to pepper the back wall. The penny finally dropped when Paul Brooks and Craig Allistair came together, and got Bergholt up to a total of 45. Paul Brooks top scoring with 14. Sampfords reserves, veterans of the league, knew exactly what they were doing in the field, taking all catches that came their way. Fresh from his recent 5-12 second XI bowling performance, Jimmy McClewan opened the bowling, sending down a mixture of good and bad deliveries. It took until the 4th over before Bergholt got a breakthrough, with Andy Buckley claiming the first wicket, then very nearly the second with a hard chance being spilt by make shift keeper Richard Goody. Good bowling from debutants Craig Allistair and Sam Coleman made Sampfords Reserves work for the runs, eventually getting them in the 10th over, with Coleman and Allistair claiming a wicket each.To sum up, a hiccup for Bergholt in their first game of the season, though a valuable lesson learnt in how to build an innings.
