Another Petchey Award and another Winner in a Alex

Alex Rippingale, 14, is the third winner of the club's prestigious Jack Petchey Foundation Award scheme, as voted by the Colts across different age groups. At the club's pavillion on Friday 22 August, Chairman Nigel Passmore presented a proud Alex with his certificate and the £300 award cheque. Alex opted to donate to the club's fund to purchase a new mower for the square for the 2009 season

Both Nigel and Joint Under 14 Manager, Mark Joel, congratulated and commended Alex for his helpfulness and commitment to the team ethic within his age group. The next Jack Petchey award will be presented at the club's Annual Trophy Presentation Evening on Saturday 4 October.

MATT MACDONALD SCOOPS SECOND JACK PETCHEY AWARD

Matthew Macdonald, 14, has won West Bergholt Cricket Club's second Jack Petchey award. On Friday 11th July, club Chairman Nigel Passmore presented Matt with a certificate and a cheque for £300 which he has elected to put towards the club's fund for a new mower.

Matt received the most votes from his peers but in a strong second place was Jacob Hill who was highly rated. Matt was commended by his team mates who variously described him as 'supportive', 'helpful in training' and 'considerate'.

The next Jack Petchey award will be presented in late August and pictures are in the photocentre.

CLUB MOURNS VINA'S PASSING AWAY

Vina Cooper was a lovely, warm and friendly lady. The wife of our former President Bert, they had a very happy life together and - alongside him - she supported our cricket club dutifully for many years from the 1940’s.

Vina always had a kind word to say about everybody and would have a giggle with anybody given the opportunity and could often be seen leaning on her front gate watching the world go by and ready to have a friendly chat with a passer by. One of my memories was from when I was a youngster and the job of filling up the water urns before match days fell on the younger players shoulders (before we had running water down at the ground). So we would walk to Bert and Vina’s house at the end of Manor Road, knock politely on their front door and wait. Vina always welcomed us in as if we lived there and as if she was puzzled as to why we were waiting to come in.

The cricket club was one of the most important things in Bert and Vina’s lives. With no children of their own, Bert and Vina used their time and energy to encourage the village’s children to take part and enjoy cricket at the club. Bert ran boys cricket at the club for many years, introducing among others the young Nobby Clark to WBCC some 56 years ago – not a bad investment in the club’s future. In a time before telephones were commonplace Bert was known to bicycle far and wide to pick teams and go to matches.

However, cricket is nothing without teas and fund raising, and Vina was best at organising those. She very active for the best part of 40 years baking pies made from blackberries picked from bushes at the ground and laying out teas on one huge outdoor table that both teams would sit around - on the site of the current pavilion. Vina was also a dab hand at organising whist drives and raffles. Vina continued helping with teas when our new pavilion was built in the 1980’s until she was well into her 70’s – she liked the new kitchen and by then we also had running water.

Until Vina moved to a home for the elderly five years ago, she would still pop down to the ground now and again to see how ‘her boys’ were getting on.

Vina’s other devotion was the church. She would often walk straight from doing something or other at the cricket club, up Manor Road and down School Lane to the church to help there. Vina would have been very pleased that we have an annual charity match with the church these days.

A lovely lady, a lovely couple, fondly remembered by all that knew Vina and Bert at WBCC.

CLUB CELEBRATES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FESTIVAL

The weather held throughout another very successful Festival which was attended by some 250 people over the course of the four days. On Thursday, the HM Prison Officers' X1 beat a PDQ X1 narrowly by just 8 runs; on Friday WBCC beat Real Oddies in their annual fixture by 60 runs. On the social front, there was a well attended Poker Evening on Friday. Saturday was devoted to inter-club senior and junior matches, culminating in a hugely enjoyable Race Night.

Sunday saw another very closely competed match between the Wynettes who narrowly defeated a West Bergholt Church X1. This was the club's annual Charity match and £120 will be presented to each of the West Bergholt Church fund and to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

One of the highlights of the Festival was the inaugural presentation of the Jack Petchey Foundation Awards scheme. Under this scheme, the club is granted £300 every 6 weeks, following a vote by our Juniors for the team mate that they consider to be the most helpful and most dedicated to the club's team ethic. Matthew Rogers was the proud winner and our Chairman, Nigel, presented him with his certificate and pin badge. Matthew has decide that he would like the club to put the money towards the cost of a boundary rope which can be used by all club teams. Well done, Matthew!

Nigel would like to thank all committee members as well as many other club members who put in hours of work over the long weekend to help make the Festival so enjoyable for our many visitors. Thanks also to all other members and the various teams that visited us with their families who helped to make the weekend a financial success, so vital for the continuing development of our fine club.

Nobby Signs Off

Club stalwart Nobby has retired from West Bergholt Cricket Club after a long and distinguished career at the club.

Nobby started playing for the club back in 1952 and remains the club's highest ever wicket taker on record. Apart from his playing career his contributions to the development of the club have been immense over the years. He has held senior positions including the Chair for many years and was President between 2000 and 2008.

Perhaps his work as Groundsman will be remembered best by current members. For over 25 years he has devoted innumerable hours to maintaining the beautiful Manor Ground to the highest of standards not only on the wickets but also on the outfied and surrounding area.

Nigel Passmore, Chairman, presented Nobby with a bench to mark his retirement as Groundsman and President. It is hoped that Nobby's association with the club will carry on for many years to come in his capacity as Honorary Life Member.

Pictures of Nobby and his Bench can been seen on the Photo Centre tab.

VETS SIGN-OFF WITH DEFEAT IN RUN-OUT FIASCO

The evergreen Over 40s ended their season at the Ford County Ground with a defeat at the hands of Hutton. West Bergholt promised a challenging score but a series of comic run-outs left the 'lads' with a score of 71 all out with five balls remaining. Hutton cruised to victory despite fine fielding by WBCC.

A tally of 3 wins and 3 defeats ensured mid-table respectability and a better performance than the last two years. Plans to win the league next year will be formulated soon...

CLUB VETERANS MAKE IT TWO OUT OF THREE

The club's evergreen Over 40 team (most of whom would qualify for an Over 50 team) made it two wins out of three on Thursday against old rivals, Elsenham.

After posting an impressive 98 for the loss of just one wicket, West Bergholt bagged all Elsenham's wickets as they replied with a score just over 60.

The 'Vets' now face the might of Hornchurch next Thursday but captain Stuart Barton still believes that the play-offs remain a realistic target.

NEW LEASE SECURES FUTURE FOR WBCC

After many months of negotiation with owner Stephen Penrose, I am very pleased to announce that the trustees have secured a 21 years' lease on the Manor Ground.

This is excellent news for WBCC as this formal 'security of tenure' means that we can now plan ahead for the Club in the knowledge that we have a long-term future at the Manor Ground. In addition, it should mean that Grant Aid is more easily attainable for major projects that the Club may wish to undertake in the future.

Please contact me for any further information.

A Message from the Chairman on the recent Club Festival

Now that the 2007 Club Festival has drawn to a close, I would like to thank all those members and the many guests who supported the various events over the long weekend. Although we were affected by rain on both the Saturday and Sunday, we still managed to play cricket on all four days and even introduced a mini-Croquet tournament on Saturday afternoon!

We started on Thursday evening and the Club won a keenly fought duel against Chelmsford HM Prison Officers X1. The match was played in fine weather and well over 20 dedicated poker players then got down to serious business in the pavillion.

Despite torrential downpours in neighbouring Colchester, the gods looked down favourably on our fine club and our micro climate meant that we were able to take on Real Oddies without so much as a drop of rain falling from the sky. Our talents shone through as well with a resulting comfortable victory. 'Pyjama' clothing was once again in full evidence for this annual fixture.

The annual inter-club tournament involving two WBCC teams and Arthur 'Worm' Wormington's X1 never quite happened due to periodic cloudbursts. This led to larger than usual consumption of bitter, lager, hotdogs, burgers and kebabs but who was complaining? A one -off Twenty20 match between an Andy Buckley X1 and a Trevor Rogers X1 was huge fun and won by the former. The cricket and the croquet was followed by the hugely enjoyable, annual Race Night. Everyone took their chances with a variety of 'horses' and there was equal joy and despair as the results unfolded through the fading light.

On Sunday, the micro climatic conditions deserted West Bergholt and it tipped down all morning. However, brave souls from Birkett Long and the Village Church duly pitched up and managed a tightly contested softball Twenty20 match, narrowly won by the lawyers. The event was worth attending alone for the lovely tea provided by Julie Cant and Maureen Hooten, supported by many of the players' wives and partners. It was all in a good cause with the proceeds headed for Cancer Research UK and the Village Church fund.

Special thanks to all committee members for organising a successful weekend and to Kevin Johnson for living in the barbecue tent for almost four days and cooking delicious food for us all.

If anyone has any comments about the Festival or ideas about how we should make changes for next year, the committee would love to hear from you. Feel free to e-mail me through the website.

Nigel.

21-03-07 - Ron Lodge

It is with deep regret that we have learned of the untimely death of Ron Lodge

Ron was a great supporter of WBCC as he watched his sons John, Ray and Peter progress through the ranks of the club.In the days when we only played friendly matches, not content with just watching, Ron was always willing to step in if we were a man short. After we joined the league, Ron continued his support as an umpire. He will be sorely missed by the older members of the club who spent many a night in a pub after the match with Ron, as he regaled us many a time of his cricketing exploits as a younger man, and I’m sure we would all be richer if we had followed his racing tips, even though he normally gave these out after the race had been run.Instead we will all be that much poorer for his passing

Heartfelt condolences go out to Margaret and all the family on this sad occasion
